English Abstract

Since 2011, Graz has hosted a series of football tournaments for young people that was started by the social integration sport project SIQ of Caritas Styria along with the Grazer Friedensbüro (Graz Peace Office) and the Jugendzentrum Don Bosco (Don Bosco Youth Centre): the Grazer Stadtteilliga (Graz Neighbourhood League), now called "International Allstars League Graz". The joy and fun of playing football have motivated 29 teams of boys and girls from a wide variety of backgrounds who range in age from 10 to 21 to participate in the league. They take part in football tournaments as well as social education workshops that are part of the league. In addition, a league council provides a space for practicing democracy building. To ultimately go away a winner, participation in the league council is just as important as athletic achievement, and fair behaviour while doing sport is just as important as workshop participation. The main goal is to support adolescents and young adults not served by typical adult education courses and political education in acquiring political competences, content and behaviours on their own so that they can experience and accept their share of responsibility in society.
