English Abstract

”Grätzeleltern”(Neighbourhood Parents) is a new project started in 2012 by two Viennese institutions, Caritas Vienna and the Viennese Urban Renewal Office (Gebietsbetreuung Stadterneuerung in German), which is concerned with economically underdeveloped urban residential areas in the 6th and 15th districts of Vienna. With the motto "Help to help yourself," inhabitants are schooled on the subjects of living together and pass on the knowledge they have acquired as"neighbourhood parents" by visiting other inhabitants in their communities and circle of acquaintances in the Grätzel (word in Viennese dialect for neighbourhood, comparable to the German term Kiez). They act as a bridge between households in difficult living situations and professional agencies and offerings. This should contribute to an improvement in the living situation. The project also aims to develop the competences of the inhabitants and to allow them to participate more in society. The project is a community organization project that uses methods from community education and community development. A variety of challenges and opportunities have arisen over the course of its ongoing implementation.
