Dieser Beitrag untersucht den Strafvollzug aus der Perspektive der Lebenslaufforschung und analysiert die Rolle von Bildungsprozessen als Chance für eine soziale Neuausrichtung. Eine Haftstrafe wird dabei als kritisches Lebensereignis definiert, das zwar einen drastischen biografischen Bruch darstellt, aber gleichzeitig Raum für persönliche Weiterentwicklung und Resozialisierung bieten kann. Da viele Inhaftierte ein niedriges formales Bildungsniveau aufweisen, besteht ein dringender Bedarf an gezielten Maßnahmen der Erwachsenenbildung. Zentral ist dabei der gesetzliche Auftrag zur Resozialisierung, der die Angleichung an allgemeine Lebensverhältnisse und die Förderung von Arbeit und Bildung umfasst. Ein wichtiges Instrument stellt die digitale elis-Plattform dar, die in Deutschland und Österreich vielfältige Lerninhalte von der Grundbildung bis zum Fernstudium bereitstellt. Gelingende Bildungsprozesse unterstützen laut der Desistance-Forschung den dauerhaften Ausstieg aus der Straffälligkeit durch berufliche Qualifizierung und soziale Teilhabe. Wimmer und Marten plädieren dafür, strukturelle Hindernisse der „totalen Institution“ Gefängnis wie reglementierten Internetzugang oder isoliertes Lernen zu überwinden und die Institution stärker als modernen Lernort zu begreifen. English Abstract

Educational Processes in the Penal System - How prison sentences as critical life events open up new opportunities

This article examines the penal system from the perspective of life course research and analyses the role of educational processes as an opportunity for a new social orientation. A prison sentence is defined as a critical life event that while representing a drastic biographical break can also provide space for personal development and resocialisation. Since many prisoners have a low level of formal education, there is an urgent need for specific measures for adult education. Central to this is the legal order for resocialisation that encompasses the adaptation to general living conditions and the promotion of work and education. The digital platform “elis” is an important tool that offers a variety of learning content from basic education to correspondence degree courses in Germany and Austria. According to desistance research, successful educational processes support the permanent cessation of delinquency through professional qualifications and social participation. Wimmer and Martin argue that structural obstacles of the “total institution” prison such as regulated internet access or isolated learning should be overcome and the institution seen more as a modern place of learning.
