English Abstract

The present article deals with the question to what extent the socio-cultural local community work project "15., Süd" which ran from 1997-1999 was able to contribute to promoting the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the district inhabitants involved in the project while keeping in mind the eight key competences for lifelong learning. One of the projec's goals was to strengthen communication and non-violent conflict resolution, cultural diversity and intercultural learning in "Vienna’s poorest district", a district characterized by crowded housing conditions and disproportionately high shares of socially underprivileged low income groups. And what is more: It was planned to create recreational facilities, which would result in a better quality of life for all of the district‘s inhabitants. The author provides a glimpse of the starting point, guidelines, processes and implementation of the many and multifaceted offerings and initiatives. Many impulses came from the district inhabitants themselves and thus provided them with the possibility to actively participate in the design of their immediate environment.
