English Abstract

The change in life expectancy and an increasing quality of life in old age have had far-reaching consequences for society, for the economy, for families, for relationships between the generations and for individuals. Adult education can significantly support the shaping and managing of the third and fourth life phases – and is increasingly requested to do so from many sides. This affects both self-determined ageing and the contribution to social cohesion over generations. The current issue 13 of the Austrian Open Access Journal for Adult Education (Magazin erwachsenenbildung.at in German) explores an appropriate image of age and ageing, social limitations and individual resources for learning in old age and a suitable teaching and learning culture. Empirical research, theoretical reflections and didactic concepts are complemented by a range of practical examples.
