English Abstract

The article presents the results of an empirical study commissioned by the "learn forever" experts’ network on the educational wishes and demands of unemployed and educationally disadvantaged women who only have finished compulsory education. This article focuses on those women who are particularly at risk of being excluded from social learning offers and thus of losing access to the knowledge society. The findings of the study show that this test group is very complex and has not managed to (re-)enter formalised continuing education for many and diverse reasons. Various factors on the political, structural, social, and personal level come together and contribute to the fact that these women see little benefit in continuing education. The lack of appropriate learning offers, their current perspectives on the employment market, negative learning experiences in the past, long absences from gainful employment and continuing education, the gender-specific division of work and its consequences make up just a few of the aspects that get in the way of any existing strengths and wishes. Based on these results, selected strategies are introduced at the end of the article that enable this disadvantaged group of women to re-enter the learning process.
