English Abstract

During the political upheaval of 1968, the conditions of second chance education were also discussed. In 1973, about 5000 students organized their own college following an escalation at the private Gabbes School. This "School for Adult Education" (Schule für Erwachsenenbildung - SfE in German) developed its own curricula and created autonomous living conditions in order to prepare adults to take the external state examination to acquire the Abitur (school-leaving exam or Matura in Austria) over the period of six semesters. One could also complete the secondary school level I exam (Mittlere Reife in Germany). This was financially possible both because students were able to receive state funding and because teachers made due with smaller wages. The present article describes the political and pedagogical elements of the initial phase of the college that is still in existence today as an example for emancipatory learning.
