English Abstract

Global Learning is not a required subject for the degree programme "Internationale Entwicklung" (International Development) at the University of Vienna. Nevertheless, 35 students enrol on it semester after semester. The seminar provides them with the opportunity to reflect on their professional knowledge in open and participatory forms of learning before the mirror of their own experiences in a complexly networked world; such has been the experience of the author. The following article describes the goals, content and methods of this course, which has been offered since 2008, in which the interplay of theory and practice as well as action and reflection is practised on concrete, globally relevant topics. The seminar centres around the question of which competences must be acquired in order to lead a successful life in a global society with many contradictions. Reflection shows that this example includes a range of didactic and methodological implications that could also be used as the basis for adult education offerings.
