English Abstract

This article illuminates similarities and differences between the concept of Global Learning and Paulo Freire‘s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The fruitful dialogue between both of these concepts should clarify what a political adult education, one that is able to contribute to the understanding of complex developments and the successful orientation of people, should look like in a global context. A presentation of the differences between the concepts will be followed by an explanation of the similarities. As a synthesis, the dialectic of education will be discussed using four pairs of contradictions that characterise education in the context of globalisation today: individualisation versus standardisation, fragmentation versus universalisation, consumption versus protest and finally allocation versus emancipation.
