English Abstract
Public libraries provide stimulating, open spaces where people can encounter the worlds and thoughts of a variety of times and societies. As institutions that are equally open to all age groups and that work out special offerings for them, public libraries are particularly well suited to bringing up and responding to questions related to ageing as well as challenges concerning the changes, upheavals and redefinitions brought on by ageing. Thus they can be helpful companions along the path to active ageing that everybody has to find individually. This article attempts to treat possible learning experiences and processes of change by giving concrete examples put into context in the broad realm of literature and libraries.
